What is ALIVE?

The Arizona Library Institute, Virtual Extension (ALIVE) offers an exciting opportunity for library education, camaraderie and professional growth. ALIVE is designed with one main goal in mind: to help you excel in your job at the public library.
Beginning in January 2010 and ending in June, you can learn more about librarianship and enjoy networking with your colleagues from all over the state through three avenues:
  1. Self-paced classes via AZ Webjunction
  2. Monthly real-time online discussions with expert presenter
  3. These three components make up monthly modules that are simple to complete.
WebJunction group ALIVE is always available for questions and comments.

Why ALIVE?
  • Excel in your job at the public library. Improve your chances of career advancement
  • Get the edge in a growth industry; U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics anticipates expansion in the library and information science sector
  • Project a positive image to the public, which translates into support of all kinds
  • Become familiar with virtual meetings, plus learning & collaboration tools
  • Express your commitment to the library profession
  • Find personal fulfillment
  • Enjoy camaraderie and networking with your colleagues
Do it for your community!    Do it for your co-workers!   Do it for yourself!

How does ALIVE work?

You can participate in ALIVE in two ways, either as a committed member of the ALIVE Team or on an as-needed basis. ALIVE Team members will participate in all five classes and discussions and will be expected to contribute to the WebJunction group at least once a month. ALIVE Team members will also agree to promote the project to their colleagues.
If you can't join the team, you can still register for the WebJunction classes and the discussions as needed. Everyone will earn contact hours toward Arizona State Library Certification based on class completion, discussion attendance and groupwork contributions. To join the program, follow these steps:
  • Create your WebJunction account at az.webjunction.org
  • In az.webjunction.org click on the AZ RoundUp tab, go to ALIVE, and fill out a brief application (see left navigation).
  • Once your application has been approved, you can go to az.webjunction.org, click on Courses, and sign up for ALIVE. Here are the remaining courses for each month:
    • April: Ethics in the Real World
    • May: Reaching Reluctant Readers
  •  Complete each course before the 20th of the month. If you’ve taken a specific course already, you may take another WebJunction course on the same topic.
  • There will be a short homework assignment for each monthly module.
  • Use the ALIVE group to post homework, share ideas, and ask questions.
  • Join the online discussion. Detailed instructions for logging into Live Classroom will be emailed to you.

Each discussion will take place on the last Thursday of each month (except for the last module) at 8:30 AM:

April 29, June 3

It should take between 4 and 7 hours per month to complete each module.
